John Blaney was born May 1, 1875 in Manchester England, the son of John Blaney and Elizabeth Wilson.

 

John immigrated to Canada in 1881 and at the time of the 1901 census was living in  Spence Township with wife Mary and their daughter Gertrude in the home of  Mary’s sister and brother-in-law James and Emma Brown and family.

John Blaney Jr. married Mary Langford on December 23, 1897. John was living in Magnetawan at the time and was identified as a lumberman. Mary was the daughter of Thomas Langford and Susan Blakely and was living in Spence.

At the time of the 1911 census, John, Mary and their three daughters lived in Magnetawan.

 

In his attestation paper signed in October 15, 1915 in Parry Sound, John Blaney identified that he lived in Magnetewan and that his next of kin was his wife Mary Blaney.

 

 

John arrived in England on the S.S. Caronia on November 11, 1916 with 162nd and was posted to the 36th Reserve Bn, the following day.

 

During his service John suffered from a variety of health issues and spent time in hospital on a number of occasions as a result.

 

These ultimately resulted in his return to Canada on August 28, 1917.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The note at left identifies that the underlying issue was chronic pulmonary tuberculosis first experienced in November of 1916.

Previously in February of 1916 John had suffered a severe haemerrhage and was in bed for seven weeks:

 

As a result of the tuberculosis that continued, John was recommended for sanatorium treatment.

John received his discharge from the army on April 11, 1918.

At the time of the 1921 census, Mary Blaney and daughters Laura and Gertrude were identified as living in Ward 5, Toronto West. John Blaney appeared to be living in Burks Falls, occupation teamster.
